THIS IS WHERE WE DISPLAY POSSIBLE CAMERA TECHNIQUES THAT WE WILL USE FOR OUR TRAILER, AS WELL AS THE INSPIRATIONS AND THE EQUIPMENT WE WILL BE USING TO MAKE THE SHOTS POSSIBLE.
|
|
These are some trailers that have inspired shots for our trailer, they use multiple angles to tell and express a storyline, and this is what we would like to achieve in our trailers. The feeling of fear.
SCREAM |
HALLOWEEN |
The Scream trailer has a lot of conventions of a horror film, however one of the inspirations of our shots, was a shot between a protagonist and the main antagonist. This is a shot were you can see both of them, via the reflection of a window.
|
The Halloween trailer has a shot of the protagonist running away from the antagonist and it is shot, outside in an extreme long shot. We took inspiration from this shot and made one of our protagonists run outside but using a birds eye view shot.
|
FRIDAY THE 13TH (2009) |
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (2010) |
There is a Two Shot with the Antagonist and Protagonist in Friday the 13th, this is a shot that we gained inspiration from in our trailer.
|
In Nightmare on Elm street there is a over the shoulder shot of the protagonist from the antagonist point of view. We also gained inspiration from this in our trailer.

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) |
THE EXORCIST (1973) |

These are the different camera accessories we are using to create camera shots in our trailer.
This keeps the camera in a steady position and we can create shots like pan shots or tilt shots.
|
You place this on your shoulder, and you can create more stabilised shots, like handheld shots.
|
This is a track, which you can place your camera and move it along a track, this creates smooth looking track shots, for following a movement.
|
MINI DOLLY |
STEADICAM |
HARAMBE GRIP |
You can place a camera on top of this and move it around smoothly, this is easier to assemble than a track and has more movement freedom.
|
This is attached to a body and makes camera shots super stabilised, so we can use this to create steadicam shots.
|
We attach the camera to the top, and then we can place it anywhere, because it has a very strong grip so we can place it in places like a tree or other high places without it falling.
|
CAMERA DRONE
These are the different camera settings that we will use to improve the quality of our shots.
EXPOSURE TRIANGLE
The exposure triangle explains the balance between the perfect exposures.
LENS FOCUS
The lens focus bends light so that it can concentrate on to certain points, and hence "focus". This technique is used to focus on a particular subject or object within the frame. It can also improve the quality of the shot.
Camera Focusing settings:
Canon 550D & 600D: TTL-CT-SIR AF-dedicated with a CMOS sensor Auto Focus and Manual Focus AF Predicted up to 10m AF working range: EV -0.5 -18 (at 23°C & ISO100) Canon 7D: TTL-CT-SIR CMOS sensor Auto focus and Manual focus AF predicted up to 8m AF working range: -0.5 - 18 EV (at 23°C, ISO 100) Canon 750D & 1100D: TTL-CT-SIR AF-dedicated with a CMOS sensor Auto Focus and Manual Focus AF Predicted up to 10m AF working range: EV -0.5 -18 (at 23°C & ISO100) |
SHUTTER SPEED
Shutter speed, also known as “exposure time”, stands for the length of time a camera shutter is open to expose light into the camera sensor. If the shutter speed is fast, it can help to freeze action completely. If the shutter speed is slow, it can create an effect called “motion blur”, where moving objects appear blurred along the direction of the motion. Denominators larger than 60, like 1/125, 1/500, or 1/2000, are fast shutter speeds. Denominators below 60, like 1/30 and 1/15 are slow.
Camera Shutter Speeds:
Canon 550D: Maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds Canon 7D: Shutter speed range 30 to 1/8000 s Bulb Canon 600D: Shutter speed range 1/4000 to 30 sec and bulb, 1/200 s X-sync Canon 750D: 30-1/4000 sec (1/2 or 1/3 stop increments), Bulb Canon 1100D: Shutter speed range 1/4000 to 30 s and Bulb, 1/200 s X-sync GoPro Hero: Max: 0.5sec Min: 1/8192 |
APERTURE
Depth of field is defined as the zone of acceptable sharpness in front of and behind the subject on which the lens is focused. Aperture also affects shutter speed. Using a low aperture means more light is entering the lens and therefore the shutter doesn't need to stay open as long to make a correct exposure which translates into a faster shutter speed.
Camera apertures settings:
Canon 550D: Maximum aperture of f/3.5 Canon 7D: Maximum aperture of f/3.5 Canon 600D: Maximum aperture of f/3.5 Canon 750D: Maximum aperture of f/3.5 Canon 1100D: Maximum aperture of f/3.5 GoPro Hero: Maximum aperture of f/2.9 |
ISO
ISO is the level of sensitivity of your camera to available light. The lower the ISO number, the less sensitive it is to the light, while a higher ISO number increases the sensitivity of your camera. he component within your camera that can change sensitivity is called “image sensor” or simply “sensor”. It is the most important part of a camera and it is responsible for gathering light and transforming it into an image. With increased sensitivity, your camera sensor can capture images in low-light environments without having to use a flash. But higher sensitivity comes at an expense – it adds grain or “noise” to the pictures.
Sensor sizes:
Canon 550D: APS-C (22.3mm x 14.9mm) Native ISO: 100 - 6400 Canon 7D: APS-C (22.3mm x 14.9mm) Native ISO: 100 - 6400 Canon 600D: APS-C (22.3mm x 14.9mm) Native ISO: 100 - 6400 Canon 750D: APS-C (22.3mm x 14.9mm) Native ISO: 100 - 12,800 Canon 1100D: APS-C (22.0mm x 14.7mm) Native ISO: 100 - 6400 Gopro Hero: 1/2.5" |

Edited Video Session
Evaluation
This camera session went well, i explored different camera movements that add effect to our trailer, this also let me know how different the camera movements can make a shot more interesting. I also explored a little with after effects on this diary session, applying my knowledge that i learnt at the Video and Film workshop over half term.
More Camera Work
Over the half term i borrowed the ASAHI PENTAX K1000 from school, it is a film camera which is a lot more manual. I used it to take pictures of places in different locations, but the main benefit was that i learnt more bout how camera's work. Such as i learnt how the shutter speed can also affect the ISO, it also allowed me to practice moving the focus via the lens. (although the focus distance were very short) It definitely helped me practice the different techniques & settings that i would be able to use when controlling the camera for our trailer, magazine and poster.
The Film and Video Workshop
Over the half term i also took part in BFI Film academy Video and Film workshop, where i learnt how to present ideas to others in the creative industries, work effectively with a team in the industry, make the most of opportunities, to increase my skills and gain experience in the creative industries, plan and schedule the film or television production, use editing to create the story and learn about post production. Over the week i was allocated the roles of sound engineer, camera operator and in charge of some VFX/rotoscoping. I learnt many different skills as well as bettering my experience in camera work, so i am now more confident in working with a camera, which will help a lot towards our trailer.
